Is UC Berkeley or Yale better for computer science?
I'm trying to figure out which school would be a better fit for studying computer science. I know both UC Berkeley and Yale are very strong schools overall, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for CS.

UC Berkeley has the edge for computer science. Its CS program is one of the most established and visible in the country, the course catalog is much deeper, and Berkeley is tightly connected to the Bay Area tech ecosystem in a way Yale is not.
The biggest difference is the scale and strength of the department itself. Berkeley offers far more upper-level CS options, more specialized subfields, and a larger research footprint across areas like AI, systems, theory, security, and robotics. As a CS student, that usually means more chances to explore niche interests, join major labs, and be surrounded by a very large peer community focused on computing.
Location matters a lot here too. Berkeley students benefit from immediate proximity to Silicon Valley, frequent recruiter presence, strong startup culture, and a long pipeline into internships and full-time tech roles. Yale students can absolutely reach top tech jobs, but Berkeley’s industry connections in computer science are simply more built into everyday campus life.
The classroom experience is where Yale can be more appealing for some students. Yale tends to offer a smaller, more undergraduate-centered environment, with more of the residential college feel and often easier access to faculty outside huge lecture settings. Berkeley CS can be exciting and high-powered, but it can also feel more intense, crowded, and competitive, especially in foundational courses.
Interdisciplinary flexibility is another real distinction. Yale is excellent if you want a liberal arts environment and expect to combine CS with philosophy, economics, political science, or other humanities fields in a more intimate setting. Berkeley also supports interdisciplinary work, but its CS identity is much more dominant and professionally oriented.
So for the computer science major itself, Berkeley is the stronger option. Yale becomes most compelling when the smaller community, residential experience, and broader undergraduate atmosphere matter enough that you would trade some CS depth and tech adjacency for them.
