Columbia vs Carnegie Mellon for computer science: which is better for undergraduates?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and these two keep coming up for computer science. On paper they both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare for undergrad CS in terms of academics, research, and overall student experience.

I’m mostly looking for a school where I can get a solid CS education and have good opportunities after graduation.

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for undergraduate computer science. Its School of Computer Science is unusually deep at the undergrad level, with a larger concentration of CS-focused faculty, more specialized course pathways, and a campus culture where computing is central rather than one strong department among many.

Academically, CMU is simply more built around CS. Undergraduates can access a broad set of upper-level areas like systems, machine learning, robotics, theory, human-computer interaction, and language technologies in a way that feels highly structured and mature. Columbia’s CS department is strong and respected, but at CMU the undergraduate curriculum and advising ecosystem are more intentionally designed for students who want a serious, technical CS education from day one.

For research, both offer real opportunities, but CMU tends to make them more abundant and more visible because so much of the university’s research identity is tied to computing. Labs in robotics, AI, systems, and HCI are a major part of campus life, and undergrads often benefit from being in an environment where those projects are everywhere. At Columbia, research can still be excellent, especially with access to interdisciplinary work through engineering, data science, and New York-based institutions, but it is less singularly centered on CS.

The student experience is one of the biggest differences. CMU often feels more focused, technical, and project-heavy, with many peers intensely invested in building, coding, and problem solving. Columbia gives you a broader university experience through the Core Curriculum, stronger immersion in New York City, and easier day-to-day exposure to fields like finance, media, policy, and startups beyond engineering.

For outcomes after graduation, both schools place well, but CMU carries especially strong weight with employers in software and technical recruiting. Columbia also opens excellent doors, particularly if you want to combine CS with entrepreneurship, quantitative fields, or other industries tied to NYC. If your main criterion is the strongest undergraduate CS environment itself, CMU comes out ahead.
