Is Georgetown or William & Mary worth the cost for undergraduates?

I’m trying to figure out whether paying more for Georgetown or William & Mary actually makes sense for an undergrad degree. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m not sure if the extra cost really translates into better opportunities after college.

I’m mostly thinking about long-term value like internships, networking, and jobs after graduation.

For undergraduate long-term value tied to internships, networking, and first-job access, Georgetown is more likely to justify a higher price tag than William & Mary, especially if you want politics, international affairs, policy, business, or fields where location and alumni connections matter early. Georgetown’s Washington, DC setting creates unusually direct access to Capitol Hill, federal agencies, think tanks, consulting firms, NGOs, and semester-time internships. Its alumni network is also especially visible in government, diplomacy, finance, and policy-adjacent careers.

The biggest differentiator is proximity to opportunity during the school year. Georgetown students can often build resumes while classes are in session because internships in DC are part of the normal undergraduate experience, not just a summer plan. That matters because repeated part-time internships, research roles, and networking meetings can stack up into stronger job outcomes by senior year.

A second difference is brand strength in a few specific pipelines. Georgetown carries more national pull in international relations, public policy, political science, and certain business tracks, and employers in those spaces know the school well. If your goals are concentrated in those areas, the premium can translate into earlier access, stronger mentorship, and a network that opens doors faster.

William & Mary still offers excellent undergraduate teaching, strong outcomes, and a loyal alumni base, but its value case is best when the cost is meaningfully lower. It is especially attractive for students who want a classic undergraduate experience, close faculty access, and solid preparation for law school, public service, business, or graduate study without paying private-school prices. The opportunities are real, but they are usually less embedded in day-to-day location advantages than at Georgetown.

So the practical answer is that Georgetown can be worth the extra cost when the price difference is manageable and your career plans line up with the sectors where DC access matters immediately. If the gap would require substantial debt, William & Mary is often the smarter financial decision because the outcomes are still strong enough that avoiding heavy borrowing can matter more than the marginal prestige bump.
