Northwestern or Cornell: which campus is more beautiful?

Cornell is more often the one people call more beautiful, mainly because of its dramatic natural setting. Its campus sits on hills above Cayuga Lake and is cut through by deep gorges, waterfalls, stone bridges, and big overlook views, so the scenery feels striking in a way few campuses do. Northwestern is very attractive too, but its beauty is more polished and lakeside than dramatic.

Cornell stands out for sheer landscape. The Ithaca setting gives it a rugged, almost cinematic feel, especially around the Arts Quad, Libe Slope, and the gorge areas near central campus. The mix of historic stone buildings, steep terrain, and surrounding nature makes the campus feel distinctive and memorable even beyond the main academic spaces.

Northwestern’s appeal comes from Lake Michigan. The Evanston campus has open lake views, a cleaner and more manicured layout, and a lighter, more relaxed atmosphere in good weather. It can feel especially pretty along the lakefill and near the shoreline, but the architecture is somewhat more mixed, and the campus experience is less visually dramatic than Cornell’s.

Season and climate also shape the impression. Cornell can look stunning in fall and winter, with the hills and gorges adding a lot of character, though the weather is harsher and the terrain is steeper. Northwestern has a softer, breezier beauty and feels more integrated with a pleasant suburban town, which some people find more livable day to day.

So in terms of pure visual wow factor, Cornell usually gets the edge. Northwestern tends to win more on elegance, openness, and lakefront calm rather than unforgettable natural scenery.
