Is UC Davis or Princeton better for graduate school preparation?

Princeton is the stronger choice for graduate school preparation. Its undergraduate model is built around close faculty mentorship, independent research, and a required senior thesis in many departments, which means students are often pushed into the kind of sustained academic work that grad programs value. It also has exceptional resources for undergraduates, and because Princeton does not have the same large graduate student population as many research universities, undergrads often get more direct access to professors and research roles.

Faculty access is one of the biggest differences. At Princeton, small classes and the university’s strong emphasis on undergraduate teaching make it easier to build relationships with professors who can later write detailed recommendation letters. That matters a lot for graduate admissions, where strong, specific letters and evidence of intellectual maturity carry real weight.

Research opportunities also tend to be more streamlined for undergrads at Princeton. There are extensive funded summer research options, junior papers or independent projects in some concentrations, and senior independent work is a core part of the academic culture. That setup gives students more chances to produce serious scholarly work before they apply to grad school.

UC Davis is still an excellent university for graduate preparation, especially in areas like agriculture, biological sciences, environmental fields, veterinary medicine, and some engineering and social science areas. Because it is a large public research university, it offers a huge range of labs, centers, and graduate-level activity. But students usually need to be more proactive to stand out, secure mentorship, and navigate larger classes, especially early on.
