Is UC Davis or Northwestern better for undergraduate research opportunities?

For undergraduate research, Northwestern usually offers the more accessible path, especially if you want to get involved early and work closely with faculty in a smaller private-school environment. It has a strong culture of undergraduate research across fields, and advising support through the Office of Undergraduate Research. Because the undergraduate population is smaller than UC Davis’s, students often find it easier to build direct relationships with professors and labs.

Northwestern tends to fit the student who wants research woven into the undergraduate experience from the start. It is especially appealing if you want flexibility across disciplines, since research is active not only in STEM but also in social sciences, humanities, journalism, and interdisciplinary institutes.

UC Davis is excellent for the student who wants a huge research university with breadth, especially in biological sciences, agriculture, environmental science, veterinary-related fields, public health, engineering, and neuroscience. Davis has major research infrastructure, many labs, and a lot happening on campus, including opportunities connected to its medical and agricultural strengths. Undergrads absolutely do research there, and motivated students can find meaningful lab roles.

The tradeoff is that Davis is larger, so access can feel less automatic and more dependent on persistence, timing, and how proactively you reach out. That does not mean the opportunities are weaker, just that the path can be less personalized. A student who is comfortable navigating a big public university, contacting many labs, and taking initiative in a large academic system can do extremely well at Davis.

If research access and support are the deciding factor by themselves, I would lean Northwestern. If your interests line up closely with Davis’s standout areas and you are excited by the scale of a major public research campus, Davis can still be a very strong place to do serious undergraduate research.
