Is Harvard or USC better for entertainment careers?

I’m trying to figure out which school would give me a better path into entertainment, especially for jobs or networking after college. I know both schools have strong reputations, but they seem to lead to different kinds of opportunities.

I’m a high school student looking at long-term career outcomes, not just campus vibe. I want to understand which one is generally considered better for getting started in entertainment.

The biggest practical tradeoff is industry proximity versus broader prestige. USC places you in Los Angeles, right next to film studios, agencies, production companies, and entertainment startups, which makes internships, semester-time networking, and early credits much easier to build. Harvard has enormous name recognition and a powerful alumni network, but it is not as directly plugged into the day-to-day hiring pipelines of film, TV, and entertainment production.

For getting started specifically in entertainment, USC is usually the more direct path. Its connections to the entertainment industry are unusually strong, especially through the School of Cinematic Arts and the wider LA ecosystem. Even beyond film majors, students can access internships and part-time work during the school year in a way that is much harder from Cambridge.

That matters because entertainment hiring often runs on relationships, timing, and real experience as much as brand name. Being able to intern repeatedly, meet assistants and executives, work on student and independent sets, and stay in the local scene during college can translate into earlier entry-level opportunities after graduation. USC is especially well positioned for film, television, production, screenwriting, media business, and agency-track work.

Harvard can still lead to entertainment careers, especially on the business, legal, executive, or broader media side. Its alumni network reaches into every major industry, and a Harvard degree carries weight well beyond Hollywood. For someone who may want entertainment but also wants maximum flexibility for consulting, law, business, politics, or graduate school, Harvard gives you a wider all-purpose platform.

But if the question is which school is generally considered better for launching an entertainment career, USC has the clearer edge. It is more embedded in the industry, more convenient for entertainment internships while enrolled, and more commonly seen as a practical feeder into Hollywood-facing work right out of college.
