Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign harder to get into than Vanderbilt University?

I’m trying to compare two schools I’m interested in and figure out which one is generally more selective. I know both are competitive, but I want a simple way to understand how their admissions difficulty stacks up overall.

I’m not asking about this year specifically, just which school is typically harder to get into.

Vanderbilt University is typically harder to get into than the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign overall. Vanderbilt has a much more uniformly selective admissions process across majors, draws a very large national applicant pool for a relatively small class, and is widely considered one of the more difficult private universities to enter. UIUC is also very competitive, but its selectivity varies a lot more by program, with some majors being far tougher than the university as a whole.

One big differentiator is how admissions are structured. At UIUC, difficulty depends heavily on what you apply for. Engineering, computer science, and business can be extremely selective, sometimes feeling closer to top-tier private-school competition, while other colleges and majors are noticeably less difficult. Vanderbilt does not have that same level of major-by-major variation for most applicants, so the baseline level of selectivity is higher across the board.

Another difference is applicant volume relative to class size. Vanderbilt attracts applicants from across the country and internationally as a highly sought-after private university, and it has limited room in each incoming class. That creates a very compressed admissions process where strong grades and scores alone are rarely enough. UIUC also gets many applications, especially for popular programs, but the overall admissions landscape is less uniformly compressed than Vanderbilt’s.
