University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs. Tulane for pre-dental: which is the better choice?

UIUC is the better choice for pre-dental for most students. It has a larger and more established STEM infrastructure, a wide range of science majors and upper-level lab courses, and a campus environment that is especially strong for students planning professional school. For pre-dental specifically, that usually means more flexibility in building a rigorous science record and more chances to find research, faculty connections, and science-focused peers.

One big differentiator is academic depth in the sciences. UIUC has very strong biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and related departments, which matters because dental school preparation depends heavily on doing well in core science sequences and then adding advanced coursework that shows readiness. At a place with broad lab offerings and many science pathways, it is often easier to find the right classes, research settings, and faculty mentors who are used to writing recommendations for health-professions applicants.

Another difference is the pre-health ecosystem. UIUC’s size can make advising feel less personal at times, but it also means there is a substantial pre-health population, student organizations, and structured support for students pursuing dentistry and other health fields. Tulane has real advantages, especially if you value a smaller private-school feel and the access to New Orleans for service and clinical exposure. Those are meaningful strengths, and Tulane can work very well for a motivated pre-dental student.
