Notre Dame vs UChicago for academic rigor: which is more demanding academically?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UChicago is known for a heavier culture of constant intellectual intensity, while Notre Dame is challenging but usually feels more balanced day to day. At UChicago, the Core Curriculum is a major part of that experience: it is broad, discussion-heavy, and often writing-intensive even outside your major. Notre Dame also has a core curriculum and serious academics, but students more often describe the atmosphere as rigorous without the same all-encompassing academic pressure.

If the question is purely which school is more demanding academically, UChicago has the stronger reputation for rigor. It is especially known for dense reading, substantial writing, and a campus culture where academics are central to social life and identity.

Notre Dame is absolutely not easy, especially in engineering, science, business, and certain honors or pre-med tracks. But compared with UChicago, the workload tends to be described as more manageable and the overall environment less relentlessly intense.
