Georgetown or WashU for pre-med and medicine: which is the better choice?

WashU is the stronger overall path for a student who already knows they want pre-med. Its undergraduate experience is unusually tied into a major academic medical center, the advising infrastructure around pre-health is deep, and there are more built-in research and hospital opportunities that fit naturally into a pre-med schedule.

One big difference is access to medicine as part of daily campus life. WashU students are connected to Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which creates a very dense environment for clinical exposure, physician shadowing, biomedical research, and health-related volunteering. Georgetown has excellent proximity to hospitals and public policy opportunities in DC, but WashU’s medical ecosystem feels more integrated into the undergraduate experience.

Research is also a meaningful point in WashU’s favor. For a student interested in bench science, translational research, neuroscience, public health research, or clinical projects, WashU offers a particularly rich set of options through its medical school and affiliated institutes. Georgetown has good opportunities as well, especially for students interested in global health, bioethics, and health policy, but WashU tends to offer more depth on the pure medical-science side.

The main reason to pick Georgetown instead would be if you want medicine shaped by DC-specific advantages like health policy, advocacy, global health, or Jesuit values around service and ethics. But for the clearest, most resourced undergraduate runway into medicine itself, WashU has the edge.
