Carnegie Mellon or Yale for biology research?

I'm trying to compare Carnegie Mellon and Yale for someone who wants to get involved in biology research as an undergrad. I know both are strong schools, but I am mostly interested in which one is better for finding research opportunities, working with faculty, and building a solid path for grad school later.

I am a junior and starting to narrow down my list, so I want to understand how the research experience might feel at each school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is research environment: Yale gives you a much larger, more established biological and biomedical research ecosystem, while Carnegie Mellon offers a more interdisciplinary, tech-heavy approach where biology often connects with computation, engineering, and neuroscience. For straight biology research and preparation for biology PhD or biomedical graduate work, Yale usually has the deeper bench of labs, faculty, and related infrastructure. For faculty access, both schools can be good, but in different ways. CMU's smaller biology footprint can make departments feel tight-knit, and that can help motivated students stand out quickly. Yale's scale gives you more faculty to choose from, which can be better when you are still figuring out your exact interests.

For grad school preparation, Yale has the edge for most students focused on biology because of the breadth of research, stronger life-sciences visibility, and medical-school-linked opportunities. Carnegie Mellon becomes especially compelling if you already know you want biology through a computational or engineering lens.
