Which is better for extracurricular opportunities, UC Berkeley or USC?

USC is usually the easier place to build an active extracurricular profile as an undergraduate. It has a more centralized campus culture, a strong emphasis on student involvement, and many clubs and campus programs that are tightly woven into day-to-day student life. Berkeley absolutely has huge breadth, but access can feel more competitive and less streamlined because of the school’s size and decentralized structure.

At USC, student organizations tend to be highly visible and easier to plug into early. Residential life, school spirit, and campus events create a setting where clubs recruit heavily and undergrads often find leadership tracks quickly.

Berkeley offers an enormous number of organizations and some especially impressive student-run groups, but that scale cuts both ways. Many clubs are active and ambitious, yet some of the most sought-after ones can have selective applications, and navigating opportunities can require more self-direction. The upside is that Berkeley students can tap into both campus and broader Bay Area opportunities, but those experiences are not always as contained within a single campus community.

For leadership specifically, USC often feels more accessible because undergraduates are working within a smaller, more residential environment where involvement is easier to sustain. Berkeley can be outstanding for students who are proactive and comfortable chasing opportunities in a large ecosystem, but for straightforward access to clubs, community, and leadership roles, USC has the edge.
