Harvard or Columbia: Which offers better access to internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus campus-based recruiting strength. Columbia gives you immediate access to New York internships during the academic year, which matters a lot for fields like finance, media, publishing, arts, startups, nonprofits, and parts of tech. Harvard, meanwhile, has extremely strong employer interest and alumni pull, but many internships are more likely to happen in the summer or require commuting into Boston rather than being woven into your weekly routine as easily.

For pure day-to-day access, Columbia usually has the edge. Being in Manhattan means students can realistically intern part time during the semester, attend industry events after class, and build relationships with employers nearby. That kind of proximity makes a real difference because opportunities are not just available in theory, they are physically easier to reach and often easier to sustain over time.

Harvard is not lacking in opportunity at all. Its name recognition, alumni network, and recruiting presence are exceptional, and top employers recruit there heavily across consulting, finance, tech, research, government, and more. But Cambridge is a different setup from New York City: excellent access, especially for research, startups, biotech, policy, and Boston-area roles, yet not the same density of semester-time internship options across as many industries.

A lot depends on the kind of internship you mean. For Wall Street, media, publishing, fashion-adjacent business roles, and UN or NGO exposure in the city, Columbia has a very tangible advantage. For academic research, and access to a broad national network that opens doors almost anywhere, Harvard can be just as powerful and sometimes stronger.

If the question is internship access overall, not prestige or long-term brand value, Columbia has the more convenient and immediate pipeline because New York functions like an extension of campus.
