Is the University of Washington or the University of South Carolina considered more prestigious?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for my college list and keep seeing people rank them differently depending on where they live and what major they’re talking about.

I know prestige can be subjective, but I’m mostly wondering which one is generally seen as having the stronger overall reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is national academic reputation versus regional name strength: the University of Washington is more often seen as the stronger university overall, while the University of South Carolina has solid recognition especially in the Southeast and in certain programs. UW is widely known as a major public research university with strong visibility in fields like computer science, engineering, medicine, and the sciences. South Carolina is respected, but its reputation is usually more regional and less broadly academic in the same way.

If you are asking about overall prestige in the broad national sense, Washington usually comes out ahead. It has a stronger association with high-level research, attracts more national attention across multiple disciplines, and tends to carry more weight with people familiar with public flagship universities. That matters most if you are comparing general reputation rather than campus culture, cost, or a specific department.

That said, USC can be the more recognized name in some circles simply because of geography. In the Southeast, especially for business, honors opportunities, and alumni connections in that region, South Carolina can feel very well established. For a student planning to work or live in that area, that local reputation can be quite useful even if the school is not usually viewed as more prestigious overall.

Major also changes the answer a bit. For tech, engineering, science, health-related fields, and research-heavy paths, UW has the clearer edge in reputation. South Carolina has real strengths too, but if the question is which school is more broadly considered prestigious across the country, the University of Washington is the one most people would place higher.
