Is the University of Washington or San Jose State better for computer science?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools for computer science and keep seeing different opinions depending on who I ask. I want to understand which one is generally considered stronger for CS overall, especially for academics and career opportunities.

I’m a high school student trying to narrow down my college list and would like a clear comparison of the two programs.

The biggest practical tradeoff is program prestige and academic depth versus access to Silicon Valley during the school year. University of Washington has a much stronger national reputation in computer science, a deeper research ecosystem, and tighter connections to major tech employers in Seattle. San Jose State benefits a lot from location, especially for internships during the semester, but its CS program is not viewed at the same academic level as UW’s.

For academics, UW is the clearer standout. Its computer science program is widely regarded as one of the top public-university options in the country, with extensive course offerings, strong faculty, and serious opportunities in areas like AI, systems, HCI, and data science. SJSU is respected as a practical, career-oriented school, but it does not have the same breadth, selectivity, or research intensity.

For career outcomes, both can lead to strong tech jobs, but they do so in different ways. UW benefits from a very powerful recruiting pipeline, especially with companies like Microsoft and Amazon nearby, and its name carries more weight nationally. SJSU places well into the tech industry because employers know students are local and available, which can make internships more accessible, especially at small and mid-sized firms in the Bay Area.

UW is considered the stronger computer science school. SJSU is still a solid option, especially for students focused on affordability, commuting, and Silicon Valley proximity, but if you are asking which program is stronger in academics and overall CS reputation, UW is the more impressive choice.
