Is UCLA or Columbia better for city life as a college student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Columbia gives you a much more integrated, transit-based city experience, while UCLA gives you access to a huge city that often feels harder to navigate day to day without a car or longer rides. Columbia sits in Manhattan with direct subway access, dense neighborhoods, and a campus that opens straight into New York life. UCLA is in Westwood, which is lively and pleasant but more self-contained, and Los Angeles is far more spread out.

For getting around as a student, Columbia is the easier place by a clear margin. You can get to different neighborhoods, museums, restaurants, concerts, internships, and parks quickly on foot or by subway, and that changes how often you actually use the city. At UCLA, there is plenty to do in Westwood, Santa Monica, and other parts of LA, but traffic and distance make spontaneous exploring less simple.

In terms of feeling like part of the city, Columbia usually wins too. Morningside Heights is very much a real New York neighborhood, and students are constantly moving between campus and the city around them. UCLA has a beautiful residential campus and strong campus life, but LA can feel more segmented, so you may feel like you are visiting different pockets of the city rather than living inside one continuous urban environment.

For pure city life as a college student, Columbia is the stronger answer. UCLA offers an exciting version of city access, especially if you like sunshine, beaches, and a more campus-centered lifestyle, but Columbia is the one that more consistently feels active, explorable, and woven into everyday student life.
