Is UMass Amherst or Tufts generally considered more prestigious?

In everyday perception, people usually place Tufts a tier above UMass Amherst for overall prestige, even though both are respected schools.

Tufts is a smaller private university with a long-established reputation for attracting students from across the country and internationally, and that tends to shape how people talk about its status. UMass Amherst has a strong academic reputation too, but as a public flagship it is often judged differently, with more emphasis on scale, accessibility, and broad state-university strengths.
