Its campus sits right against the Flatirons, and outdoor activity is woven into daily life in a way that feels immediate rather than occasional. If you want the kind of place where being outside between classes feels like part of the school’s identity, Boulder stands out.

CU Boulder tends to appeal to students who want nature to feel visually and socially present all the time. You can walk across campus with mountain views in front of you, and it is very normal for students to hike, run, bike, or head outdoors casually during the week. The setting makes the campus feel more integrated with the surrounding landscape, not just landscaped within its own boundaries.

UConn fits students who want a more traditional college campus with green space, a classic New England setting, and room to walk around, but not necessarily a dramatic outdoor environment. The campus in Storrs is attractive and spacious, with wooded areas and a strong residential feel, so you can absolutely spend time outside there. But the experience is more quad-and-campus-centered than mountain-and-trail-centered.
