Which has better undergraduate research opportunities: UCLA or UC Merced?

The biggest tradeoff is scale versus access: UCLA has far more labs, funding, and research breadth, while UC Merced usually makes it easier for undergraduates to get involved earlier and work more directly with faculty. At UCLA, you are plugged into a major research university with extensive activity across STEM, social sciences, humanities, medicine, and engineering. At UC Merced, the research ecosystem is smaller, but that often means less competition for spots and more room for undergrads to become meaningful contributors quickly.

If your priority is the sheer number and variety of opportunities, UCLA has the edge. There are more centers, more graduate programs, more ongoing projects, and more chances to find a niche if your interests are very specific. That matters if you want flexibility to explore different subfields or access to large, well-funded labs.

If your priority is realistic early access and close faculty involvement, UC Merced is often the more straightforward place to get that. Smaller departments and a newer campus culture tend to make it easier for students to connect with professors, join projects sooner, and avoid being one of many undergrads trying to get noticed in a very large research environment.

At UCLA, undergrads absolutely do research, but the process can require more initiative. You may need to email more professors, apply to structured programs, and compete with many other students. Once you get in, the opportunities can be excellent, but access is not always as immediate.

So for better access to hands-on research early in college, UC Merced often has the advantage. For the strongest overall research ecosystem and the widest range of possible projects, UCLA comes out ahead.
