Is UC Davis or Cal Poly more fun for undergrads?

The biggest practical tradeoff is college-town energy versus beach-town access. UC Davis has the more classic big-campus, bike-heavy, student-saturated social environment, while Cal Poly San Luis Obispo gives you a smaller-city feel with easy access to downtown SLO, hiking, and the coast. Both can be fun, but the kind of fun is noticeably different.

UC Davis tends to feel livelier in a traditional undergrad sense because the town revolves around the university. A huge share of people around you are students, so weekends, apartment hangouts, campus events, club life, and spontaneous plans are easy to build into your routine. The campus is large, there are lots of organizations, and biking everywhere adds to that active, social rhythm.

Cal Poly has a strong social scene too, but it often feels more centered on lifestyle and location. Students spend time downtown, at farmers markets, on hikes, at the beach, or at smaller gatherings rather than relying as much on campus-centered activity. San Luis Obispo is charming and very college-oriented, but the social atmosphere can feel a bit more spread out and less dominated by one giant university ecosystem than Davis.

For weekends specifically, Cal Poly has the edge if your idea of fun includes outdoor recreation and getting off campus easily. For everyday social ease, Davis often wins because there is such a dense concentration of students and student life right around you. Some students find Davis more immediately social, while Cal Poly can feel more balanced and lifestyle-driven.

If the question is which school tends to feel more fun overall for undergrads, I’d give a slight edge to UC Davis for the average student, mainly because it delivers a more consistently active college-town experience. Cal Poly can absolutely be the more enjoyable place if beaches, hiking, and SLO’s setting matter a lot to you.
