Case Western vs Wake Forest for biology: which is better overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is research intensity versus a more traditional campus-centered undergraduate experience. Case Western is tightly connected to major medical and research institutions in Cleveland, especially through its proximity to the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and its own medical school, so biology students tend to have unusually strong access to labs and health-related opportunities. Wake Forest offers strong biology teaching and good pre-health preparation too, but its overall environment is more residential and less built around a giant research ecosystem.

For biology specifically, Case Western usually has the edge if you care most about lab access, biomedical exposure, and flexibility for research-heavy or medically adjacent paths. Its setting makes it easier to find opportunities in neuroscience, molecular biology, public health, and clinical research early in college. That matters if you want a résumé that is dense with hands-on science before applying to grad school or health professions programs.

Wake Forest is still a very good option, especially if you want smaller-feeling classes, close faculty interaction, and a strong liberal arts atmosphere alongside science. Many students prefer its campus culture, school spirit, and more cohesive undergraduate community. In my view, Wake can feel more balanced and personal day to day, while Case can feel more professionally plugged into science and medicine from the start.

For biology alone, I would lean Case Western. It is the more compelling choice when the priority is research access and preparation for grad school or health-related careers, while Wake Forest becomes more attractive if you value the campus experience and teaching environment enough that you are willing to give up some of that built-in research intensity.
