Case Western vs Northwestern for engineering: which is better for an undergraduate engineering student?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Case Western and Northwestern seem strong for engineering. I’m interested in getting a solid engineering education, but I also care about research opportunities, internships, and how easy it is to build connections with professors.

Since I’m comparing them mostly as an undergrad engineering student, I’d like to know which one generally has the stronger engineering experience overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialized, engineering-centered attention at Case Western versus a broader, more resourced, higher-profile university environment at Northwestern. Both give undergraduates real access to research and faculty, but they feel different: Case Western is more engineering-saturated and closely tied to Cleveland’s medical and technical institutions, while Northwestern offers a larger academic platform, stronger overall name recognition, and very deep connections to industry and interdisciplinary work.

For pure undergraduate engineering experience, Northwestern usually comes out ahead overall. Because engineering is such a large part of the campus identity, connecting with professors and joining labs may feel more straightforward and less diffused across a huge university ecosystem. Its location near the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and other research institutions is especially valuable for biomedical engineering and adjacent areas.

Northwestern still does very well on professor access, despite being the more prominent name. Classes in engineering are not so large that undergrads disappear, and students who seek out office hours, labs, and project teams can build strong faculty relationships. It also has an edge in breadth: stronger national pull across many engineering fields, excellent interdisciplinary options, and a campus environment that can open more doors outside engineering too.

If the question is which school offers the stronger overall undergraduate engineering platform, I would give the edge to Northwestern. I would lean toward Case Western only if you strongly prefer a more STEM-focused campus culture, want a setting where engineering is even more central to student life, or are especially drawn to biomedical and health-related engineering opportunities in Cleveland.
