Is UC San Diego or Brandeis better for undergraduate research opportunities?

UC San Diego has the edge for undergraduate research opportunities, mainly because of its scale, research infrastructure, and the sheer number of labs and institutes on campus and nearby.

One concrete difference is the research ecosystem itself. UCSD is tied closely to major centers like Scripps Institution of Oceanography and sits next to a dense cluster of research institutes in La Jolla, which creates a lot of opportunities beyond a single department.

Another difference is access style. Brandeis is smaller, and that can make it easier to build close relationships with faculty earlier, especially if you are proactive and want a more intimate academic setting. In practice, that can be a real advantage for mentorship.

A third factor is field strength. If your interests lean toward STEM, neuroscience, biology, engineering, marine science, or medically connected research, UCSD is especially hard to beat because of the depth of active research in those areas. Brandeis is excellent in the sciences too, particularly in biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience, but its opportunities are concentrated in a smaller environment.
