Is UC San Diego or Fordham better for campus life?

For campus life alone, UC San Diego and Fordham feel very different, and the better one depends on what kind of social atmosphere you want. UC San Diego has a more traditional residential campus experience: a large student body, lots of student organizations, recreation around the beach and San Diego weather, and activity centered on the college system and campus events. Fordham, especially the Rose Hill campus, has a more contained, classic campus in New York City, but student life is shaped heavily by the city itself, with many students socializing off campus as much as on it.

UC San Diego tends to fit students who want an active campus with a lot of built-in student life options, even if it is not known as a big party school. There is plenty happening through clubs, cultural organizations, performances, intramurals, and events across the residential colleges. At the same time, UCSD has a reputation for being somewhat more laid-back and sometimes socially diffuse, partly because of its size and partly because students can spread out across different colleges and nearby neighborhoods.

Fordham fits students who like having a recognizable campus community but do not need all of their social life to come from the campus itself. At Rose Hill, students often describe a stronger sense of school identity and a more centralized campus feel than at UCSD. But a lot of the appeal is access to New York, so the social experience can feel less campus-contained and more urban, with weekends and free time often tied to the city.

If by campus life you mean an energetic, self-contained college environment with good weather and lots of on-campus student activity, UC San Diego probably has the edge. If you mean a spirited campus that is closely tied to an exciting city and you like the idea of your social life extending beyond campus gates, Fordham can easily feel more alive on a daily basis. Between the two, UCSD usually feels more like a full campus ecosystem, while Fordham feels more like campus plus New York as one combined experience.
