Which is better for finance careers: UC Irvine or Indiana University?
I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and Indiana University and I’m interested in finance after college. I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure which one gives students a stronger path into finance jobs.
I’m mainly trying to understand which school has the better overall track record for helping students get internships, networking opportunities, and entry-level roles in finance.

For finance specifically, Indiana University usually offers the clearer and more established path. The Kelley School of Business has a long-standing national reputation in business, very active recruiting, and a large alumni network that is especially useful for internships and first jobs in finance. UC Irvine can still lead to solid finance outcomes, particularly in Southern California, but Indiana tends to have the stronger built-in pipeline.
Indiana fits the student who wants a campus where finance recruiting is already a major part of the culture. Kelley has specialized clubs, workshops, case competitions, and alumni engagement that make it easier to find peers aiming for investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, and related fields. That matters because finance hiring often depends on structured recruiting and student organizations as much as coursework.
UC Irvine makes more sense for someone who wants to build a finance career in California and is comfortable being more proactive. Its location is a real advantage for internships during the school year, especially for students interested in corporate finance, real estate, wealth management, and finance roles connected to Orange County or Los Angeles. The Merage School has strong business connections, but the school does not carry the same across-the-board finance recruiting reputation as Kelley.
If you are aiming at the widest range of finance opportunities right out of college, especially roles that rely heavily on campus recruiting, Indiana has the edge. If your priorities are staying in California, using local internship access during college, and potentially combining finance with West Coast industry connections, UC Irvine becomes more compelling.
A student who is focused on traditional finance recruiting and wants the most established undergraduate business ecosystem would usually find Indiana easier to leverage. A student who values Southern California location and plans to hustle for nearby internships could still do very well at UC Irvine, but more of the momentum may need to come from the student rather than the school’s built-in recruiting machine.
