UC Irvine vs San Diego State for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?
I’m trying to decide between UC Irvine and San Diego State, and I want to study something that can lead to a career in finance. I know both schools can be good options, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to give students a stronger path into internships, networking, and entry-level finance jobs.
I’m not looking for a prestige-only answer, just which school is generally better for someone who wants to break into finance after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UC Irvine tends to give you a somewhat stronger academic brand and better access to Orange County and nearby Los Angeles finance recruiting, while San Diego State often shines in hands-on business networking and a very active local alumni pipeline. For finance careers, geography matters a lot, and Irvine places you closer to a dense concentration of corporate finance, real estate finance, wealth management, and accounting-adjacent roles in Orange County. SDSU, meanwhile, has strong employer connections in San Diego and a business school culture that many students find especially career-oriented from early on.
San Diego State is still a very credible path, especially for students who are proactive and want a more traditional business-school environment. SDSU students often benefit from a strong alumni presence in Southern California, and the school can be especially effective for business operations, commercial banking, financial advising, and corporate finance roles tied to the San Diego market.
For high-finance paths like investment banking, neither school is a major target in the way a few elite campuses are, so success at either one will depend heavily on your GPA, internships, networking, technical prep, and student involvement. In that lane, Irvine’s location near larger finance ecosystems gives it a modest advantage, but it is not automatic recruiting at either school.
My direct pick for finance recruiting and internship access is UC Irvine, by a noticeable but not overwhelming margin. It is the safer choice if you want the widest range of finance-related opportunities and easier proximity to Orange County and LA employers. SDSU is still a strong option, but more of the momentum there may come from how actively you build it yourself.
