Is UC Berkeley or University of Cambridge better for computer science?

For undergraduate computer science, UC Berkeley is usually the stronger choice if you want breadth, direct access to the U.S. tech industry, and a department that is deeply tied to modern software, AI, systems, and startups. Berkeley’s EECS and CS programs are exceptionally well regarded by employers and researchers, and being in the Bay Area creates unusually strong opportunities for internships, recruiting, and industry-connected projects. Cambridge is also world-class, but its undergraduate experience is more theoretical, more structured, and more oriented around mathematics-heavy foundations and the supervision system.

A student who wants to explore many subfields, take advanced electives early, join research labs, and be surrounded by major tech recruiting pipelines will usually find Berkeley especially compelling. In computer science, Berkeley has a long-standing reputation for influence across operating systems, machine learning, databases, security, and entrepreneurship. In the field, a Berkeley CS degree is viewed as elite and very recognizable, especially in the U.S. and in tech hiring circles.

Cambridge makes more sense for a student who wants a highly academic, tightly organized course with intense intellectual depth from the start. Its Computer Science Tripos is respected worldwide, and Cambridge carries enormous prestige, especially in the UK, Europe, and academia. The teaching model, with small-group supervisions, can be a major advantage for students who thrive in rigorous discussion and close faculty engagement.

In terms of how they are viewed, both are top-tier names, but they are known for somewhat different strengths. Berkeley is often seen as one of the central undergraduate pipelines into high-level tech work and research in the U.S. Cambridge is often seen as one of the most prestigious and intellectually demanding universities in the world, with especially strong cachet in theoretical and academic settings.

If the question is which has the stronger overall undergraduate CS program in a practical and field-facing sense, I would give the edge to UC Berkeley. If the question is which offers the more classically rigorous and tutorial-driven academic experience, Cambridge has a real claim.
