For grad school preparation, is UC Berkeley or Williams the better undergraduate choice?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Williams, and my main concern is which one would better prepare me for grad school later on. I know they’re very different schools, so I’m trying to think beyond just reputation and look at what might matter for research, letters of recommendation, and academic support.
I’m mostly interested in which environment tends to help students become stronger graduate school applicants overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus access: UC Berkeley gives you the resources, course breadth, and research intensity of a major public research university, while Williams gives you much easier access to professors, smaller classes, and closer advising from the start. For graduate school preparation, both can work very well, but they help in different ways. Berkeley can be especially strong if you already know you want to dive into advanced research early and are comfortable navigating a large, competitive environment.
Williams tends to make the path to becoming a strong grad school applicant more guided. Its small size means faculty often know students extremely well, which can matter a lot for recommendation letters, mentorship, and independent academic work.
Berkeley’s advantage is the sheer depth of opportunities. There are more departments, more specialized upper-level classes, more active labs, and a stronger day-to-day connection to graduate-level research culture. If you are proactive, Berkeley can give you outstanding preparation, especially in fields where large research ecosystems matter a lot. The catch is that you may need to work harder to stand out, build close faculty relationships, and secure the most personalized support.
For becoming a stronger graduate school applicant overall, Williams has a slight edge for many undergraduates because it more consistently provides close mentorship, strong letters, and structured academic attention. Berkeley can absolutely match or exceed that outcome, but it usually rewards students who are unusually self-directed and persistent about seeking out opportunities in a much larger system.
