Is UC Berkeley or MIT better for data science?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and both of these schools keep coming up for data science. I know they’re both really strong, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered better for an undergraduate data science education and opportunities.

For undergraduate data science, MIT is the stronger pick if you want a more math-heavy, technical, and research-driven education with especially deep links to computing, statistics, and machine learning. UC Berkeley is outstanding too, but it stands out more for students who want a larger, more flexible public-university ecosystem, a dedicated data science major, and extremely strong access to Bay Area industry.

MIT’s advantage is that the curriculum tends to be more tightly integrated with rigorous math, computer science, and problem-solving from the start. Its undergraduate environment is smaller, which can make faculty access, research pathways, and interdisciplinary work in areas like AI, optimization, economics, and engineering feel more direct. If you see data science as a highly technical field and want intense quantitative training, MIT has a slight edge in reputation and academic style.

Berkeley makes the most sense for students who want data science in a broader real-world context. Berkeley has been one of the most visible leaders in undergraduate data science education, with a well-developed data science major and a strong culture around applying data to public policy, business, social sciences, biology, and more. Being in the Bay Area also means excellent internship and startup exposure, especially for students interested in product, analytics, and applied machine learning.

A practical difference is scale. Berkeley offers huge breadth and many opportunities, but students often need to be proactive in navigating a larger campus and competitive course enrollment. MIT is more contained and structured, which many students find helpful if they want close-knit academic intensity.
