Which is better for veterinary medicine: UC Davis or Ohio State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth and visibility versus cost and pathway structure. UC Davis has one of the most widely recognized veterinary ecosystems in the country, with a large teaching hospital, extensive animal science and veterinary-related research, and a campus culture where pre-vet students have a lot of relevant opportunities nearby. Ohio State is also very strong, but it is often seen as slightly less singularly centered on veterinary medicine than Davis, even though it has an excellent College of Veterinary Medicine and strong animal biosciences support.

For overall reputation in veterinary medicine, UC Davis usually carries more national weight. Its veterinary school is consistently regarded as one of the top names in the field, and that matters because undergraduates benefit from the surrounding infrastructure: animal facilities, research labs, faculty working directly in vet medicine, and a large pre-vet peer network. If you want a school that feels especially built around animal and agricultural sciences, Davis stands out.

Ohio State is still a serious option for a future vet. It offers strong academics, a major research university environment, and access to veterinary resources through its own vet college. It may be especially appealing if you want the breadth of a large Big Ten campus while still having solid pre-vet preparation. In practical terms, a motivated student at Ohio State can absolutely build a competitive vet school profile.

What matters most for vet school prep is not just the name of the university, but whether you can earn high grades, get animal and veterinary experience, find research or clinical exposure, and manage costs. Since veterinary school is expensive, the cheaper undergraduate option can be the smarter move if the difference in cost is large.

If the question is which program is more strongly regarded overall for veterinary medicine, UC Davis has the edge. If Ohio State is much more affordable for you, though, it is strong enough that choosing it would still make very good sense.
