For everyday undergraduate life, Middlebury usually feels more overtly fun in the traditional residential-college sense, while Johns Hopkins tends to feel fun in a more city-based, self-directed way. Middlebury has a tight campus community, a strong outdoors culture, and a social scene that is very centered on student traditions, dorm life, and the fact that most students are all living in the same place. Johns Hopkins offers access to Baltimore, more off-campus variety, and plenty happening on campus, but its vibe is often described as more intense and preprofessional.

Middlebury tends to suit students who want campus itself to be the main social world. A lot of the enjoyment there comes from easy access to hiking, skiing, snow sports, lake activities, performances, club events, and the kind of spontaneous hangouts that happen when most people stay on or near campus. Because it is smaller and more residential, it can feel easier to know people across class years and run into friends regularly.

Johns Hopkins fits students who like building their own version of fun. There are student organizations, performances, athletics, research communities, and social events, but the school is not as defined by one unified campus-social culture. Some students love that, especially if they enjoy balancing academics with city restaurants, neighborhoods, internships, and exploring Baltimore. Others feel the academic pressure is more noticeable in the day-to-day atmosphere.

If by fun you mean spirited, outdoorsy, close-knit, and campus-centered, Middlebury has the edge. If by fun you mean intellectually busy, urban, and shaped by opportunities beyond the campus gates, Johns Hopkins can be very enjoyable, but it usually requires more initiative to tap into it.
