Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Rutgers more selective for undergraduate admissions?

I’m trying to understand how these two schools compare in terms of admission selectivity because I’m considering applying to both.

I know both are large public universities, but I want to get a general sense of which one is typically harder to get into for undergraduates.

UIUC is typically more selective overall for undergraduate admissions, especially for students applying from out of state and for popular majors like engineering, computer science, and business. Rutgers is still a well-regarded public university, but in broad admissions terms it is usually more accessible than UIUC. The gap becomes more noticeable at UIUC when you apply to a specific college or major rather than just to the university as a whole.

UIUC tends to attract a very large national and international applicant pool for high-demand programs, and admission there can vary a lot by major. A student aiming for Grainger Engineering, CS, or Gies Business is facing a much tougher bar than someone applying to many Rutgers programs. If you are considering one of UIUC’s capped or especially popular majors, it makes sense to treat it as the more difficult admit.

Rutgers can still be selective, particularly at the New Brunswick campus and in certain schools or honors programs, but it usually does not have the same across-the-board intensity as UIUC. For a student with solid academic credentials looking at a range of majors, Rutgers often feels more attainable, especially for New Jersey residents.

One important detail is that both schools are not equally selective across every program. At either university, admission can shift depending on your intended field, residency, and campus or school within the university. But if you want the simplest overall answer, UIUC is the one most applicants would usually view as harder to get into.
