For marine science specifically, UNH usually has the edge for undergraduates who want a program with especially strong ocean and coastal science connections built into the university’s research ecosystem. Its marine and coastal work is closely tied to facilities and faculty on the New Hampshire seacoast, including the UNH Marine Program and research activity linked to places like the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory and the Gulf of Maine.

UNH tends to fit students who want marine science to feel central to campus academics rather than just one good department among many. The location matters here: Durham is close to the coast, and that proximity shows up in fieldwork, coursework, and research access.

UMaine makes a lot of sense for a student who wants a broader public university feel and is excited by Maine’s marine environment, especially if they are drawn to ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, or applied marine work tied to the Gulf of Maine. UMaine has real strengths through its marine sciences faculty and statewide research connections, and the School of Marine Sciences is well respected.
