NYU vs Tufts for computer science: which is better for a CS major?

For computer science, NYU has the edge if your priority is the overall undergraduate CS experience tied to industry access and breadth of opportunities. Its location in New York City matters a lot for internships during the school year, and the Courant Institute gives NYU serious academic credibility in math and theoretical CS. You also get a larger tech ecosystem around you, which tends to translate into more frequent recruiting, networking, and project opportunities while you are still in school.

One big differentiator is internship access during the semester. At NYU, students can realistically combine classes with part-time work, research, or startup involvement in the city in a way that is much harder at Tufts. For a CS major who wants to build a resume early, that proximity can be a real advantage.

Another is the structure and scale of the program. NYU’s CS offerings are broader, and being connected to Courant means strong foundations in algorithms, systems, theory, and applied areas. If you are the kind of student who wants a deep bench of upper-level options and a department with strong name recognition in technical fields, NYU usually comes out ahead.

Tufts is still an excellent school, and its undergraduate environment is often more intimate. You may find smaller-scale community, easier professor access in some settings, and a more traditional campus experience.
