Wake Forest or Texas A&M for finance: which is the better choice for an undergraduate finance major?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for finance and keep seeing mixed opinions. I’m mainly interested in which one would be better for building a strong finance background and opening doors after college.

I’m a high school senior narrowing down my list, and I want to make the best choice for a finance major.

Wake Forest has the edge for undergraduate finance if your main goal is the strongest direct pipeline into finance careers, especially investment banking, wealth management, and other high-touch business roles. Its business school is a central part of the undergraduate experience, finance is one of its best-known majors, and the school places a lot of emphasis on career advising, alumni access, and internship preparation. For a student focused on building a polished finance resume early, Wake tends to create a more targeted path.

One big differentiator is recruiting structure. Wake Forest is smaller, and that often means finance students have more direct access to professors, career services, and alumni in banking and corporate finance. The alumni network is especially active in East Coast finance circles, and that matters when internships and first jobs often come through relationships, referrals, and school-specific recruiting channels.

Texas A&M is still a very good option, but its strength is broader and more regional. Mays Business School has a strong reputation, and A&M’s network is enormous, particularly in Texas, where it is very well respected across corporate finance, commercial banking, energy, and consulting-related roles. If you want to work in Houston, Dallas, or stay tied to large Texas employers, A&M can open a lot of doors.

Another difference is scale and student experience. At Wake Forest, the smaller environment can make it easier to stand out, build close faculty relationships, and get individualized support for competitive finance recruiting. At A&M, you benefit from a huge alumni base and major school spirit, but you may need to be more proactive navigating a larger system and separating yourself from a bigger pool of business students.

Cost can absolutely shift the decision. If Texas A&M would be much cheaper, especially in-state, that financial advantage is hard to ignore in a field where your undergraduate school does not need to be the most expensive option to lead to strong outcomes.
