The biggest reason is proximity: being in LA makes it much easier to intern during the school year, meet alumni in the industry, and build relationships before graduation.

UCLA fits the student who wants to be plugged directly into the entertainment ecosystem while still in college. If you want internships at studios, production companies, talent agencies, streamers, or entertainment marketing firms during fall, winter, and spring, UCLA makes that logistically much easier.

UT Austin makes a lot of sense for someone who wants a broader media or entertainment path that could include production, digital media, music, sports media, or work tied to Austin’s creative scene before possibly moving to LA later. UT has a strong reputation, a huge alumni base, and respected programs in film and media, so it is absolutely a credible route into entertainment. But for many traditional film and TV entry-level jobs, you will usually need to be more intentional about making the jump, because the day-to-day access to LA internships and networking is not the same.

If your interest is specifically Hollywood film, TV development, agencies, entertainment PR, or studio-related work, employers are likely to view UCLA as the more directly connected option. If your definition of entertainment is wider and you like the idea of building strong skills at a major flagship school with a vibrant creative city around it, UT Austin can still lead there, just with a little more distance from the main hiring hub.

So in terms of name and network for entry-level entertainment hiring, UCLA tends to help more directly. UT Austin is respected, but UCLA is more embedded in the industry you are targeting.
