Cornell vs Northwestern for media careers: which is better for breaking into the industry?

Northwestern has the clearer edge for media careers, especially if you mean journalism, entertainment, production, and communications-facing roles. Cornell is excellent and can absolutely place students into media, but Northwestern is more consistently built around that path.

One major difference is the academic and preprofessional infrastructure. Northwestern’s Medill School is one of the best-known journalism programs in the country, and even beyond journalism specifically, the university has strong student media, film, radio, theater, and communications ecosystems that feed into media work. Cornell has good options through communications, performing and media arts, and student publications, but it does not have the same concentrated media identity.

Location matters more in this field than in many others. Cornell students often need to rely more heavily on summers, school breaks, or remote networking because Ithaca is much less connected to major media hubs.

The alumni network is also different in feel. Cornell’s alumni network is huge and powerful overall, but it is broader and less specifically concentrated in media pipelines.

For entertainment in particular, Northwestern also benefits from its long-standing reputation in theater, performance, comedy, and storytelling fields, which can matter for students aiming at TV, film, or creative production roles. Cornell can still be a strong launchpad, especially for someone blending media with business, tech, or policy, but for pure industry access and media-oriented momentum, Northwestern stands out.
