Which has better undergraduate research opportunities, MIT or WashU?

That makes research feel highly accessible rather than something you have to decode on your own.

The second differentiator is breadth and intensity of the research ecosystem. MIT’s concentration of labs, research centers, and faculty in STEM creates a very dense environment for hands-on work, especially if you want cutting-edge technical projects.

WashU is still excellent, especially for students interested in biology, neuroscience, medicine-adjacent fields, public health, and certain areas of basic science. It benefits a lot from its medical school and strong life sciences infrastructure, and undergrads can absolutely do meaningful lab work there. In some cases, the environment may feel a bit more personal and less pressured, which can support mentorship well.
