Which is better for biology, Colgate or Cornell?

Cornell is the stronger choice for biology. It offers much greater depth across the life sciences, a larger research ecosystem, and more built-in options for students interested in pre-med, lab work, or specialized biology fields. For a student who already knows biology is a central academic priority, Cornell simply has more ways to explore it at a high level.

One major difference is academic breadth. Cornell has a much wider range of biology-related departments and subfields, including molecular biology and genetics, ecology and evolutionary biology, neurobiology, biochemistry, animal science, plant sciences, and biomedical areas tied to its larger university structure. Colgate has a solid biology department and strong teaching, but it cannot match Cornell’s scale or the number of advanced course pathways.

Research access is another clear separator. Cornell is a major research university, so biology students are surrounded by active labs, graduate students, medical and agricultural research connections, and faculty working across many specialties. That creates more opportunities to join substantial projects during the school year and summer. Colgate does offer undergraduate research, and in some cases the smaller size can make faculty access easier, but the total volume and variety of research options are much more extensive at Cornell.

Preparation for pre-med and future science work also leans Cornell. Its advising, course offerings, and scientific infrastructure are better suited for students who may want to pursue medicine, PhD study, biotech, public health, or highly specialized biological research.
