Is Colgate or the University of Michigan better for finance careers?
I’m a junior trying to narrow down my college list, and I keep seeing both Colgate and Michigan come up for finance recruiting. I know they’re very different schools, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one has the stronger track record for helping students break into finance after graduation.
I’m not looking for a ranking in general, just which school tends to be better for finance careers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. Michigan gives you a much larger business ecosystem through Ross, far more finance-focused student organizations and recruiting activity, and a deeper on-campus pipeline into banking, asset management, and related roles. Colgate can place students into finance too, but it does so from a smaller liberal arts setting where opportunities are more relationship-driven and less built around a huge formal recruiting machine.
For finance specifically, Michigan usually has the stronger track record. Ross is one of the most established undergraduate business programs in the country, and that matters because many finance employers already know how to recruit there and what kind of preparation students get. Even outside Ross, Michigan’s size, alumni base, and employer presence create more routes into finance than Colgate can typically match.
Colgate’s advantage is that it can offer closer faculty access, a tighter alumni community, and strong outcomes for students who are proactive and polished. A motivated Colgate student can absolutely reach Wall Street, especially through networking and alumni connections. But the path is narrower, and there are simply fewer classmates, clubs, and recruiters centered on finance than at Michigan.
So if the question is strictly which school tends to be better for finance careers, Michigan has the edge. Colgate is credible for finance, but Michigan is the school more likely to give you broader recruiting access and more established finance pathways right out of college.
