UNC vs BU for internship access: which school has better opportunities for students?

BU has the edge for internship access, mainly because of location. Being in Boston puts students near hospitals, biotech firms, startups, finance companies, media organizations, nonprofits, and major employers during the school year, so it is much easier to do part-time internships without needing a car or a summer-only plan. BU also builds experiential learning into student life pretty visibly through its career office, alumni network, and the city-based rhythm of the school.

The biggest difference is simply day-to-day access. At BU, students can intern during a regular semester because employers are nearby and public transit makes commuting realistic. That matters a lot if you want to try multiple internships, build connections early, or explore different fields before junior summer.

UNC still offers strong opportunities, but they work a little differently. Chapel Hill itself is more college-town than major-city, so many UNC students look to nearby Research Triangle employers in Raleigh and Durham for internships, especially in tech, healthcare, public policy, and research. That region is a real advantage, but it usually takes more planning and transportation than BU’s setup.

School connections are solid at both places, but UNC’s network is especially strong in North Carolina and the broader Southeast, while BU benefits from being plugged into a dense urban job market with a wide national and international employer presence. For a student prioritizing sheer ease of finding internships during the academic year, BU is the more convenient environment.

UNC can be excellent if your interests line up with the Research Triangle, public service, healthcare, or research-heavy paths. But on the narrow question of internship access, BU gives most students more immediate opportunities simply because the internships are woven into the city around campus.
