Is UNC Chapel Hill or Notre Dame harder to get into for undergraduate admissions?

Notre Dame is harder to get into overall for undergraduate admissions. It draws from a national and international applicant pool, has a highly selective private-school admissions process, and does not separate applicants by residency the way UNC Chapel Hill does. UNC is also very selective, but its admissions landscape is meaningfully shaped by North Carolina residency.

The biggest differentiator is UNC’s in-state mandate. As a public flagship, UNC Chapel Hill prioritizes North Carolina residents, so in-state applicants are evaluated in a different context from out-of-state applicants. That means UNC can be extremely difficult for students applying from outside North Carolina, but not in the same across-the-board way Notre Dame is.

Notre Dame, by contrast, evaluates applicants in one private-university pool without a residency advantage. Its applicant base is self-selecting and very strong academically, and the school’s national reputation means it competes for students who are also applying to other highly selective private colleges. In practice, that makes the overall bar feel tighter and more uniform.

Another useful distinction is predictability by geography. With UNC, how hard it is to get in changes a lot depending on whether you are in-state or out-of-state. With Notre Dame, the level of selectivity is less dependent on where you live, so Notre Dame is the clearer answer.
