Rutgers vs University College London for finance: which is better for getting into banking or finance careers?

I’m trying to decide between Rutgers and University College London for undergrad, and finance is the main field I want to go into. I keep hearing that school reputation matters a lot for banking and finance jobs, but I’m not sure how these two compare in terms of career outcomes.

I want to understand which one would be the stronger choice if my goal is to break into finance after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is geography and recruiting market: UCL gives you much stronger brand recognition and recruiting access for finance roles in London and internationally, while Rutgers is more tied to the U.S. market and relies more on your own networking, internships, and hustle to break into banking. UCL sits in one of the world’s main financial centers, which matters for term-time networking, spring weeks, and internships. Rutgers has real access to New York because of location, but it is not viewed in the same target-school tier for investment banking recruiting.

For pure finance prestige, UCL has the stronger name. In the UK and across many global finance employers, UCL is a very well-known, highly respected university, and that carries weight for front-office roles. In banking, especially investment banking, employer pipelines still matter a lot, and UCL is simply closer to the firms, events, and student recruiting structures that feed London finance.

Rutgers can still work, especially for corporate finance, asset management, commercial banking, accounting-related paths, and some Wall Street outcomes, but the path is less built-in. Students aiming for high-end banking from Rutgers usually need to be very intentional about clubs, alumni outreach, technical prep, and internships early on. Being near NYC helps, but proximity alone is not the same as being one of the schools firms naturally focus on.

Another key question is where you want to work after graduation. If you want to build a career in the UK, Europe, or internationally, UCL is the clearer advantage. If you are set on the U.S., Rutgers becomes more defensible, especially if cost is much lower and you are eligible to work in the U.S. without immigration complications.

For banking or high-prestige finance specifically, I would lean UCL unless Rutgers is dramatically cheaper or your long-term goal is firmly U.S.-based and you already understand that you will need to push hard for recruiting. On brand, recruiting ecosystem, and finance visibility, UCL is the stronger platform.
