Which is better for city life, Rutgers or Fordham?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Fordham puts you much closer to a true everyday city experience, while Rutgers gives you access to urban areas but not the same constant, walk-out-the-door New York feel. Fordham’s Bronx campus is in New York City itself, with subway and rail access that make off-campus exploration part of normal student life. Rutgers, especially New Brunswick, has a more spread-out college-town setup where the city feel is present in parts but less immersive.

From a student perspective, Fordham usually feels more urban. At Rose Hill, you are in the Bronx and can get into Manhattan fairly easily, so museums, neighborhoods, restaurants, internships, and events are woven into the week rather than feeling like occasional trips. Even though the campus has gates and a more defined boundary, students still benefit from being in NYC and having a huge amount to do nearby.

Rutgers New Brunswick does have city-adjacent advantages, but it feels different. New Brunswick has restaurants, a train station, downtown activity, and some urban energy, but the Rutgers campus itself is large, bus-dependent, and split across multiple areas. That means daily life often feels more like navigating a big public university than living inside a major city.

If your main goal is easy access to neighborhoods, spontaneity, and an off-campus life that feels tightly connected to school, Fordham has the edge. Rutgers works better if you want some city access without giving up the atmosphere of a large traditional state-university campus. For city life specifically, Fordham is the stronger choice.
