Wellesley or Pomona for computer science: which is the better choice for an undergraduate CS major?

Pomona has the edge for an undergraduate CS major. The biggest reasons are the depth you get through the Claremont Colleges, stronger access to tech-oriented recruiting in Southern California, and a broader set of CS classes and collaborators than a single small liberal arts college can usually offer. For a student who knows CS is the plan, that extra scale matters.

The clearest differentiator is academic access. At Pomona, you are not limited to Pomona alone because the Claremont Colleges share departments and registration, so your CS experience draws on a larger combined faculty, more classmates in the field, and more course options across the consortium. That tends to make it easier to find upper-level electives, related math and engineering coursework, and peers building serious technical projects.

Internships also tilt toward Pomona. You are still at a liberal arts college, so recruiting is not going to feel identical to a giant engineering school, but Pomona students benefit from a larger regional market and the consortium’s shared career resources.

Support is the one area where Wellesley makes this a real decision. Wellesley is known for a very strong environment for women in STEM, close advising, and a culture where many students feel encouraged rather than weeded out.

Still, MIT cross-registration is helpful without fully replacing the day-to-day advantage of being embedded in a broader undergraduate consortium where CS is part of your normal campus ecosystem. If your top priority is the strongest overall undergraduate CS setup between these two, Pomona is the more compelling choice.
