Harvard or Emory: which is better for a finance career?
I’m a high school student trying to decide between Harvard and Emory for college, and I want to focus on finance. I know both schools are strong, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally better for getting into finance careers after graduation.
I’m mainly interested in which school has the stronger reputation and placement for finance overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige and recruiting reach versus a more business-focused undergraduate path. Harvard gives you a globally recognized name, deeper access to top Wall Street recruiting, and one of the strongest alumni networks in finance. Emory is respected and places well too, especially through Goizueta’s undergraduate business program, but its overall pull in high-finance recruiting is not on Harvard’s level.
For finance overall, Harvard has the stronger reputation and broader placement power. Firms in investment banking, private equity, hedge funds, asset management, and consulting all recruit heavily from Harvard, and the alumni network is enormous in New York, Boston, and other major finance hubs. Even students who do not major in economics can still break into finance from Harvard because the school’s brand and recruiting ecosystem are so strong.
Emory does offer a real advantage in structure if you want business courses earlier and a more clearly preprofessional setup. Goizueta is one of the more respected undergraduate business schools, and Emory students do land strong jobs in banking, consulting, and corporate finance. It can be an especially solid path for students who want a focused undergraduate business experience rather than a liberal arts model.
But if the question is simply which school is better for a finance career in terms of reputation, access, and upside, the answer is Harvard. Its name carries more weight across nearly every part of finance, and the recruiting opportunities tend to be wider and harder to match. Emory is an excellent school, but Harvard is the one with the clearer edge here.
