Is Carnegie Mellon or Georgia Tech better value for money for engineering?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a cost vs outcome perspective, not just overall prestige.

Both seem strong for engineering, but I keep hearing different opinions on whether the extra cost of one is actually worth it compared with the other. I’m mostly trying to understand which one tends to give better value for the money you spend.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus specialization: Georgia Tech is often the more economical path to an engineering degree, while Carnegie Mellon can justify a higher price mainly for students who specifically want its distinctive strengths in areas like computer engineering, robotics, AI-adjacent work, and highly interdisciplinary tech programs. Both schools have excellent engineering outcomes, strong employer recruiting, and national name recognition. For pure value, the difference usually comes down to whether CMU’s extra cost buys you opportunities you would actually use.

Georgia Tech has a strong reputation for delivering very solid return on investment in engineering because tuition is often lower, especially for in-state students, and its engineering programs are broad, well-established, and heavily recruited. Atlanta also helps with internships, co-ops, and industry access. In many traditional engineering fields, the career outcomes are strong enough that paying substantially more elsewhere can be hard to justify.

Carnegie Mellon is outstanding, but its value case is more targeted. If you are aiming at fields where CMU has unusual depth, such as robotics, embedded systems, machine learning applications, human-computer interaction overlaps, or startup-heavy tech ecosystems, the premium can make more sense. CMU’s project culture and cross-school flexibility can open doors that are especially useful for students with a clear, technical niche.

From a cost-versus-outcome perspective, Georgia Tech tends to win more often for engineering as a whole. CMU becomes worth the extra money when the price difference is manageable for your family or when you know you want the specific ecosystem CMU does exceptionally well. If the two prices are close after aid, CMU is easier to defend. If CMU is much more expensive, Georgia Tech is usually the better value purchase.
