University of Washington vs MIT for computer science: what are the main differences in undergraduate CS experience?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my list, and both University of Washington and MIT keep coming up for computer science.

I’m mostly trying to understand how the undergraduate experience differs in things like class size, access to research, internship opportunities, and overall campus environment for CS students.

For undergraduate computer science, MIT and the University of Washington can both lead to excellent outcomes, but the day-to-day experience feels quite different. MIT is usually the place for students who want an intensely technical, theory-rich environment where computer science is tightly connected to math, engineering, and hands-on building across the whole campus. UW is especially attractive for students who want a major public research university, strong industry proximity in Seattle, and a CS community that sits inside one of the country’s biggest tech hubs.

MIT tends to fit students who want a smaller, more concentrated undergraduate community in STEM. UW often appeals to students who like the energy and breadth of a large public university. Paul G. Allen School has a strong reputation, but the campus experience is broader and less uniformly STEM-focused than MIT’s. Being in Seattle matters a lot: nearby companies and the regional startup scene make internships, part-time roles, and industry events feel very present. Research is abundant at UW too, though the scale of the university can mean you need to be more intentional about finding your place.

In class structure, MIT usually feels more intimate and discussion-heavy once you get beyond introductory subjects, with a culture that expects students to wrestle with hard material collaboratively. UW can offer outstanding instruction, but some lower-division experiences may feel larger simply because it is a much bigger university. For some students that means more flexibility and course variety; for others it means less of the small-cohort feel they want.

Socially, MIT is more centered on an intense shared academic experience, with a campus culture that is famously creative, quirky, and project-oriented. UW gives you a fuller big-school environment, major school spirit, and access to city life, while still offering serious CS opportunities. MIT feels like living inside a highly concentrated technical community; UW feels like studying computer science within a major public university that is deeply plugged into industry.
