Brown’s undergraduate research environment is especially strong because research is woven into the culture across the sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities, and the university has substantial infrastructure to support student projects. Its open curriculum can also help if you want flexibility to shape your coursework around a niche research interest early.

Tufts is also very solid for undergraduates who want meaningful research, and one of its real strengths is approachability. Students often find it easier to build direct relationships with faculty earlier, especially in departments where the undergraduate population is not enormous. Tufts also has strong opportunities connected to its School of Engineering, life sciences, international relations, and health-related fields.
